Back in 2013 when I started my first blog I didn’t even know that it is possible to make money with a blog.

I started it as a creative outlet and as a fun free time activity, simply to share my thoughts and knowledge and to connect with like-minded people.

No one knew back then that blogging would turn one day into my profession.

With my 3 degrees and 10 years of work experience, I decided to leave the corporate world behind me and to become a blogger with an online business.

You probably either already have a blog or are about to start your blog as well and want to know how to make money with a blog.

In this post, I share with you 11 ways you can earn money online through a blog.

The first way to earn money online is with paid ads.

You place ad’s on your website and get paid each time someone clicks through on the ad.

The easiest way is to get started with GoogleAdsense.

Contrary to other providers they do not have a minimum traffic requirement.

However, you should know that without huge traffic to your site each day, it’ll be probably just a few cents per month you can make with ads on your website.

Once you have more constant traffic to your site, around 25.000 sessions (approx 30.000 page views) per month you can apply for Mediavine.

They pay more per click than GoogleAdsense does, but you can’t use both at the same time.

Another option for paid ads is AdThrive.

To be able to join their program you need at least 100.000 page views per month.

They pay a bit more than Mediavine does, so you could consider switching again once you hit the 100.000 pageview mark.

Whether you place ad’s on your website or don’t is up to you.

Having ad’s on your site can make your blog look cluttered up and cheap.

So be mindful where you place those ads or if you are using them at all.

I personally decided not to use them on my blog at all because I want a clean, high-end feel.

Another way to make money with blogging is through affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is when you mention products on your website and earn a commission if someone purchases the product through your link.

Whenever you are using affiliate links on your website or social media you need to disclose those.

You have to disclose them before you are posting the link in your blog post.

For the complete guideline on how to disclose affiliate links properly check out and follow the FTC disclosure policy.

Before you can start to post any affiliate links to your website you have to apply to be accepted as an affiliate partner for the products you want to endorse on your site.

The easiest way to get started with affiliate marketing is by applying for the Amazon Associates Program.

Amazon because it’s a trusted source for most people.

I bet you have already purchased something through Amazon.

Another reason why it’ s a good idea to start with Amazon is that they don’t have a minimum requirement of how many followers and traffic you need in order to be accepted.

You need a properly functioning, good looking website, being registered as a business with a tax number and have a bank account where they can transfer the money to.

That’s it.

With the Amazon Associates Program, you can start right away on day 1 once your blog is launched.

However, you have to keep in mind that you probably won’t get rich through the Amazon Associates Program.

Here again, we are talking about cents and just a few bucks you can earn especially at the beginning of your blogging journey.

It took me 4 months to make my 1st dollar through Amazon.

And actually, you have to generate at least 1 sale within the first 6 months after applying for the program otherwise they’ll close down your affiliate account.

For the requirements and all the procedures make sure to follow their guidelines.

A sponsored post is when you get paid to publish an article on your blog or social media promoting a certain product or service.

You can make a few hundred to thousands of dollars per post.

Depending on your numbers.

Meaning: how much traffic you have, how big your email list is, how many followers you have on your different social media platforms.

Writing sponsored posts is definitely a good way to make a decent amount of money instantly.

Despite the fact that it’s possible to make a lot of money with sponsored posts I personally don’t do any sponsored posts so far and would only consider doing them with products and services I really believe in and already use and love.

You could make money with your blog offering coaching sessions in a particular area that you are an expert in.

For example in the form of group coachings or 1:1 coaching sessions.

There are numerous online coaches out there offering their services from health & wellness coaching, to fitness-, relationship-, life coachings to business coachings the possibilities are endless.

Another way to make money blogging is to create and to sell your own digital products to your audience through your blog.

Before you do so you should know exactly what your audience wants.

Your products need to solve a problem they have, otherwise, they won’t pay you for it.

Most successful bloggers I know make their largest amount of money per month by selling their own products through their blog.

This is definitely also a strategy you should consider implementing in the future once you have a larger following and know exactly what your audience is longing for.

These can be for example digital products like e-books, printable workbooks + planners, calendars and online courses or also physical products like clothing, home decor, stationary materials, cookbooks, art pieces, etc.

Besides digital and physical products you can also offer services on your blog.

These can be 1:1 training sessions or consultations.

For example, as Marie Kondo does.

She is selling her consultation services on her website.

You could also offer online or offline events on your blog.

Online events could be for example online summits.

For an online summit, you interview a large number of experts, offer the event for a couple of days for free to your audience, and then sell the summit on your website.

Offline events could be for example workshops, festivals, or training sessions.

As an online entrepreneur and expert in your field, you have also the possibility to create a membership area and to offer a recurring membership service to your audience in exchange for a monthly fee.

This can be for example business mentoring, life coaching, personal development, spiritual guidance.

The benefit of a membership site is that you get to know your audience better, you build a tribe of like-minded people who can connect with each other and you’ll also have continuous monetary revenue from the membership site each month.

Online entrepreneur Kate Northrup has a membership site called origin where she teaches online business owners how to manage their time and energy well.

Gabrielle Bernstein does this for example with her spiritual guidance program called the miracle membership.

And the founder of the life coach school Brooke Castillo offers a membership program called self-coaching scholars.

So far I’ve talked about 8 different ways you can make money blogging.

Another way to make money online is by offering your services as a virtual assistant for example to other well-established bloggers and companies and getting paid for it.

You can be a virtual assistant for other bloggers helping them for example with their content creation, with their email marketing, Instagram-, Facebook, or their Pinterest strategy.

Being a freelance writer can go hand in hand with being a virtual assistant.

You could write content for other bloggers.

I know it sounds bad but most of the bigger bloggers have copywriters doing the writing work for them.

Blog posts, social media posts, emails, – you name it.

Bigger bloggers and brands as well as also newspapers and online magazines are often looking for freelance writers to help them out with their work.

Last but not least you can promote your speaking gigs on your blog.

Motivational speaker and online entrepreneur Lisa Nichols does this with her live event called “Speak And Write To Make Millions”.

Also, Rachel Hollis the author of the bestselling book Girl wash your face, likes to promote her speaking gigs called “Rise” online.

She often uses her Instastories and her Instagram feed to promote her speaking events.
