It took me 4 years to get started with my online business.
I had studied how to run a business for years and had all the theoretical knowledge, tools and strategies to get started but I didn’t start right away.
There was something holding me back from jumping in and just doing it.
It was my mindset.
Worries, fears and the limiting beliefs about myself that held me back from unfolding my true potential.
Starting an online business is not just about getting a new tax number, having the tools and strategies in place and setting up a business bank account.
A lot of different steps have to be considered before you get started.
While strategic things like a business plan or branding and social media strategy are parts for a successful online business – having the right mindset, in my opinion, is where it all starts.
Mindset is the major part that separates the winners from the losers.
Not having a certain type of mindset upfront is the reason why a lot of online entrepreneurs give up before they even get really started.
You need to know that any successful entrepreneurs you come across will have certain things in common on how they got to success:
- hard work
- consistency and a
- certain mindset
In this post, I’m shining a light on the mindset part.

WHAT ARE YOU STANDING FOR
Who are you and what are you standing for?
Ok I know there are a lot of online entrepreneurs who don’t know who they are and still have a successful business.
While I think it’s good to know both before you get started at least you should know what you / your brand / your business is standing for.
- What are you standing for?
- What are your core values? The core values of your brand/ business?
WHAT’S YOUR WHY
Knowing your why is essential to run a successful online business.
While making money can be the motivation factor to get started your business needs a deeper meaning than that.
- How can you help people with your products or services?
- Who do you want to help?
- Why do you want to help them?
What’s the deeper meaning for your business?
Example of my why:
My why is to help other creatives leaving their soul-sucking 9 to 5 jobs and to establish a success mindset so they can create the life and soul-based online business they dream about.
I want to help them to gain more freedom so they can spend more time with their loved ones and empower them to create the heart-centered, beneficial products and services they want to create so we can all make together this world a better place for future generations.
Once you decide that you want to start your online business:
You need to be willing to put yourself out there & to show up.
Be ready to show your vulnerable site as well.
There will be doubters and haters and it’s part of the process to deal with them.
They shouldn’t be the reason for not showing up.
Once you know your core values and your why your mission is clear and no one should stop you for going for your dreams.
PLAN TO FAIL
You will fail very often again and again.
Be willing to fail. This again is just part of the process.
While we were taught in school that failing is something negative and we should pass our exams in business it’s different.
Think of your business as an experiment.
Inventors fail all the time.
They made failing as part of their process.
Make it as part of your process as well.
Like Thomas A.Edison the inventor of the light bulb who had over 1000 other patents for his inventions once said:
“I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10.000 ways that won’t work.”
That’s the mindset you should adopt when you start an online business.
No one has a recipe for success.
Everyone’s business will look a bit different.
You need to be willing to trial and error your process and to fail over and over again until you succeed!
Failing forward toward success is part of the process.
“A quitter never wins, a winner never quits” – Napoleon Hill
BE A CONSTANT LEARNER
Know that especially in the online world things are changing very quickly.
New algorithms in social media are just one of the things we have to keep up with.
Be ready to become a constant learner.
You can’t just set up a website throw on a few blog posts and think that it’ll ultimately lead you to success.
Everyone I know who has a 6 or 7 figure business is always learning and implementing new strategies in their business.
No one has a recipe for bulletproof success.
Everyone in the online business is just sharing what worked for them and it might not work for you.
Be open to learn from different people and to try out the things that might work for you best.
GROWING IS PART OF THE PROCESS
Know that you will outgrow some of your relationships and friends.
Not everyone will be comfortable with the new version of yourself.
Some will feel intimidated by it.
Usually, those who don’t have the same goal as you and a different opinion about it.
Growing has always also something to do with letting go.
You need to be ready to let go of the old version of yourself to step forward and to leave people behind in the process of it.
Not only some of your friendships will change but also the way you start looking at things.
The more you learn about a certain thing the more you know about it and changes are high that this newly gained knowledge shapes your perspective.
Embrace the change in your life.
Also, know that growing into the next version of yourself will come with discomfort.
FIND YOUR MENTORS
Find people who know what you want to know and who already have what you want to have in life.
Let’s say you want to start an online business or make 6 figures with your business online.
Search for the people who have already walked the walk and can show you how to do it.
- Who is already having an online business?
- Who is already making 6 figures?
Learn from them.
You don’t have to meet them in real life in order to learn from them.
You can learn from them by reading their blogs, by listening to their podcasts, taking their online courses, following them on social media & connecting with them online.
If you think they’re the right fit and they have a product that might help you grow then go for it.
I personally have several mentors I’m learning from.
KNOW THAT IT’S NOT GOING TO BE EASY
Running an online business is not easy.
You will have times where you just want to throw in the towel and give up.
I guess all online entrepreneurs have been there at one point or another in their business.
Whenever you feel like giving up, take a short break and remember that consistency is the key to success.
By giving up you don’t give yourself the chance to succeed.
YOUR ONLY LIMIT IS YOUR MIND
Know that the only limit you have is the one you make up in your mind.
There is literally anything possible.
You can create whatever you want and you can become whoever you want to.
All great inventions started with an idea.
Think of planes, the internet or smartphones.
All of these started in the mind of the inventor.
I believe that we are all able to create great things in this world by softening the negative voices in our brains and by believing in ourselves and going for our dreams.
