This post is dedicated to probably one of the most influential personal development personalities of the last century.
His teachings are eye-opening and truly amazing.
The way he teaches is a bit old-fashioned but the nuggets of wisdom he is dropping in his teachings along the way are timeless.
But first of all – Who is Jim Rohn?
Jim Rohn was a successful entrepreneur, motivational coach, author, and mentor of Tony Robbins.
He not only influenced Tony Robbins with his work, but also other successful entrepreneurs and personal development coaches like Jack Canfield, Brian Tracy, and T Harv Eker.
Jim Rohn taught personal development and business strategies.
One focus of his teachings was how human behavior affects our personal and business achievements.
He is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the last century.
His teachings are timeless and powerful for everyone who wants to reach their life and business goals.
I love his teachings and in this post, I share with you the lessons I ‘ve learned from Jim Rohn with the intention to help you reach your goals.
His best books are:

1. DEFINE YOUR PHILOSOPHY
We can’t choose how and where we are born in this world, but we can choose what we make out of our lives.
The personal philosophy of each and everyone is influenced by what they know and what they learn.
You determine what you feed your mind with and what you learn.
The amount you’ll earn in the future correlates with your knowledge.
The more you learn, the more knowledge you’ll get.
With more knowledge also comes a further view to see opportunities and dangers in life.
The goal is to seize more opportunities.
You can learn from:
- your own failures
- the mistakes of others
- by paying attention to what you see
- listening to people who have valuable information for you
- reading books, taking courses on topics you want to master
2. EXAMINE YOUR ATTITUDE
“Life = opportunity with a mix of difficulty” – Jim Rohn
How we feel influences our attitude in life.
Examine how you feel about:
Check your self-worth and raise your self-esteem.
Stop blaming yourself for your current life situation or for your past.
It’s in your hands to turn your life around and to create the life you want.
Understand the importance of other people and learn to appreciate the gifts of others.
Don’t blame other people for your life.
Look on the positive side of other people instead.
Use your failures as your mentor and stop beating yourself up for past mistakes.
Learn to imagine your best possible life, plan your future, set goals, write everything down and to measure your progress.
Be grateful for the things you already have in life.
Develop a routine with supportive habits.
Be disciplined about your goals and keep moving forward towards your goals every day.
Use the word WILL instead of could, would, should, won’t, don’t.
3. TAKE ACTION
Imagine your best future life and have faith in the possibilities you’ve imagined.
Turn your imagination into action and do the work.
Appreciate the work you do to get the results you want in life.
Learn to work towards your goals continuously and never forget to take a rest as well.
Stop procrastinating and be disciplined about your goals instead.
Ask yourself every day:
- What can I do today to get closer to my goals?
4. MEASURE YOUR PROGRESS
“Doing a little less than you could, that’s where unhappiness starts.” – Jim Rohn
PLAN YOUR GOALS
Make a 10 years, 5 years 1-year plan of your ideal life.
Set yourself high goals, so high that it’ll stretch you into the person you can become.
While setting your goals don’t compromise your values, virtues and your philosophy.
You can make yourself the plan to master a new skill in 90 days and then to move on to the next skill.
The best way to set goals is by using the Slay your goals planner
DO THE WORK
Read books, take courses to learn new skills.
Set yourself a time limit to get the work done.
Learn continuously but don’t stick around too long in one area of learning.
MEASURE YOUR PROGRESS
Check your results daily, weekly, monthly, yearly.
5. DEFINE YOUR LIFESTYLE
Define your ideal lifestyle.
It’s different for everyone.
A good life according to Jim Rohn is defined by:
- good friends
- your inner circle
What does living a good life mean to you?
Jim Rohn suggests studying the area in life you want to master.
If you want to be wealthy study wealth from people who have already what you want.
If you want to start your own online business study starting an online business from people who have already what you want.
In the form of books, online courses, live events, audiobooks, and seminars.
6. GIVE VALUE
One major aha moment was when I learned from Jim Rohn that we don’t get paid for the time we spend on our work.
Before that, I thought being busy is a badge of honor.
But apparently this can’t be further from the truth.
Time is the most valuable asset we have in our life. Each of us.
When it’s gone no one can give it back to us.
Therefore time really shouldn’t be seen as the measuring cup for how much we earn.
Jim Rohn suggests that we don’t get paid for the time we spend to finish our work but we get paid for the value we deliver to the world.
If you want to earn more money, all you need to do is to deliver more value to the people you want to serve.
Work on yourself and develop new skills so you can offer more value to the people you want to serve.
7. THE 4 SEASONS OF LIFE
“ Life and business are like the seasons, you cannot change the seasons but you can change yourself.” – Jim Rohn
This is probably one of the most important lessons we should keep in mind.
That life and business are like seasons.
WINTER – LEARN FROM HARD TIMES
In all areas of our life, we will experience hard times, the so-called winter.
It’s not about changing the situation but about how we handle the hard winter times in our lives.
He suggests that we always should be prepared for the winter in all areas of our life.
We should use our experiences of the hard times in life to:
- get wiser
- get stronger
- get better
SPRING – TAKE THE OPPORTUNITIES
We’ll not only experience hard times in our lives which we can use to become wiser, stronger and better.
There will be also times where opportunities cross our way.
He calls it the springtime.
Take advantage of the opportunities you get in life.
SUMMER – NOURISH YOUR VALUES
In life, we’ll also be presented with challenges where it’ll be up to us to nourish our values and to defend ourselves against the negative.
FALL – BE RESPONSIBLE
Take full responsibility for your actions and inactions in life.
8. BECOME THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF
“The greatest value in life is not what you get, the greatest value in life is what you become.” – Jim Rohn
Take care of yourself physically, mentally and spiritually.
Treat your body well.
Eat healthily and exercise regularly.
Both are vital for a successful life.
“ Make sure that your outside is a major reflection of what’s going on inside” – Jim Rohn
Cultivate your mind by learning, studying, growing and changing into the person you want to be.
“Poor people have big TV’s. Rich people have big libraries.”
Develop a library with the books you want to feed your mind with.
Always have a Journal and make notes of the insights you learn from the books you are studying.
Be a student and a practitioner of spirituality.
Use every evening to reflect on the day.
What have you done?
What have you learned?
Challenges you faced?
Emotions you felt?
The gratitude you experienced?
Gather the information of today and invest it in your tomorrow.
Not only reflect daily but make it a habit to reflect weekly, monthly and yearly on your life.
Reflect on what you learned, heard, felt and how it can help you in your future.
Use the Slay your goals planner to plan your life and to reflect on your goals.
