American Psychologist Abraham Maslow called it in his hierarchy of needs the state of self-actualization.

Personal development is always happening from the inside out.

However, most people are busy living their lives the other way around.

They are more focused on what’s going on at the outside of their lives instead of connecting with themselves on the inside.

This way of living is more a reaction to outside circumstances rather than living out the full potential from the inside out.

Gladly there are great life-changing personal development books out there we can learn from.

Personal development is often confused with scholar education.

But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

While scholar education gives an overview of what happened in the past historically and gives us tools on how to solve certain tasks (math, chemistry, physics, learning a new language etc) it doesn’t cover the field of personal development.

Most people go to school, college, and maybe even university than start to work and that’s it.

At some point in their lives, they get in a type of crisis at age 25, around 30 or later.

They notice that something is missing, but can’t grasp what this is.

They feel unsatisfied and constantly on the pursuit of happiness.

And again they are trying to find this satisfaction at the outside.

By numbing themselves with pointless movies and unsatisfying parties. Trying to present a person online who they aren’t instead of diving into self-development.

Maybe the only thing is missing is just a bit of personal growth from the inside out.

 

WHAT IS PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

 

My definition is:

Personal development also called personal growth and self-improvement is the ability to grow as a person from the inside out to unfold the true character and potential of oneself.

Example:

Think of a plant who needs water in order to grow.

Just like the little seeds need their water to become a wonderful plant we humans need personal development to make sure that we grow into the person we are meant to be.

Personal development is a constant learning about yourself as a human being.

About your character, your fears, your flaws, your talents, your purpose, desires, your successes, likes and dislikes and so on.

Although it was written almost 100 years ago the ideas and principles are still relevant.

What makes this book unique?

The author of the book interviewed 500 millionaires over the course of 20 years at the beginning of the last century. Amongst other the founder of the Ford motor company, Henry Ford.

It teaches the common universal principles successful people do differently compared to the poor and to the mediocre.

These timeless principles will teach you about how to take control over your thoughts and how to change your life for the better.

One downside of the book is that it was written in the second world war and some examples aren’t that up to date.

2. 7 STRATEGIES FOR WEALTH AND HAPPINESS

If you want to learn about the success mindset you have to start with Jim Rohn.

A lot of motivational speakers, for example, Anthony Robbins and Darren Hardy studied the work of Jim Rohn before they started their own careers.

In the book, the 7 strategies for wealth and happiness he gives you clear action steps to follow to create a fulfilling life.

He talks about discipline, goal setting and the importance of the environment you are in to create the life you want.

Although the first publication was written in the 1980s the action steps he suggests to take are timeless and still valid.

A downside of the book is that the examples are a bit old-fashioned or rather I personally find it’s written in an old-fashioned way.

3. AWAKEN THE GIANT WITHIN

 

Awaken the giant within is a long book (over 500 pages) packed with great personal development ideas and exercises.

Anthony Robbins provides a lot of different self-improvement strategies interspersed with his personal stories.

If you make use of the strategies it can be life-changing.

He has written this book in a conversational language, although it’s not one of these books that you read and apply in one day.

It’s more of a great resource you can pick up whenever you need a motivational boost and want to work on yourself.

This book is the right fit for you if you want to get motivated and are looking for strategies to improve your life.

The downside of the book:

One downside is that after a while, he starts repeating himself if you are usually struggling to get through books it might be a bit challenging to get through this one.

In the 15 invaluable laws of growth, the author John C.Maxwell presents 15 strategies for self-improvement.

He calls them the laws of growth.

Through this book, you’ll learn how to improve yourself internally and externally through your inner attitude and actions in 15 different ways.

These laws of growth are universal and can be applied by anyone, anywhere in the world.

There are a lot of quotes throughout the book from influential people. If you aren’t into quotes it might be disturbing but if you love quotes its golden.

A downside of the book:

This book doesn’t cover the aspect of spiritual growth.

5. ABUNDANCE NOW

Abundance now by Lisa Nichols is a great book to begin your personal development journey with.

Lisa has published this book in 2016 and shares all her nuggets of wisdom on how she overcame her struggles while being dependent on public service to create a multi-million business.

She has a high vibe of energy and makes sure to kick you in your booty with her lively personality, emotional and funny stories.

I personally love her teachings for years and don’t ever get tired listening to or reading her teachings.  

In her book abundance now she gives you hand on examples on how to create an abundant life in all areas of your life.

A downside of the book is that it’s more a general overview of things you can do and doesn’t explain how the mind works etc in detail. Therefore it’s a perfect book to get an overview with excellent exercises to get started on the personal development journey.
