You probably have a personal Pinterest account.

And either you already have a blog or are about to start a blog in the near future and heard that Pinterest is an amazing platform to get visitors to your blog.

From my personal experience, I can say that using Pinterest to attract new visitors to my blog has been an absolute game-changer.

Almost my entire audience comes straight from Pinterest.

There are 2 different ways you can set up your Pinterest account:  Pinterest and Pinterest for business.

But what exactly is the difference between Pinterest and Pinterest for Business?

Should you use your personal account also for your blog?

Or leave your personal account and create a second account solely for your blog?

Or switch your personal account into a business account?

Pinterest is a creative platform that is built up like a huge catalog of creative ideas. 

It’s not a social media platform in the sense of Instagram where you look at nice pictures and chat with people, but a platform where you find ideas that you can implement right away in your own life.

You can personalize your site, create your own boards, upload your own pins, pin from other people’s accounts to your own boards, find new ideas and follow people. 

The platform launched in 2010 and rapidly grew to one of the most popular social media platforms in the world.

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Pinterest reported 322 million monthly active users on the platform worldwide and the number is constantly growing.

79,5% of all Pinterest users in the US are female according to statistics from 2019. 

Taken into consideration all Pinterest users 69% in the US are between 18-49 years old.

A study done by Pew Research in 2018 found out that users with higher education and a higher income are more likely to use Pinterest.

To sum it up, Pinterest is mainly used by women between the age of 18-49 years with higher education and a higher income and primarily from the USA.

Pinterest is a social media platform but not to socialize like on Facebook and Instagram but to find ideas that you can implement into your life right away.

Whether it’s a new recipe that you can try out or a new hack on how to refurbish your furniture.

Basically, Pinterest is the platform where people go and search for anything related to improving their own lives and their own lifestyle. 

It’s a motivational and inspirational social media platform.

With the focus on learning something new rather than on socializing.


Besides having a personal account you can also create a business account on Pinterest for free. 

With a business account, you have access to your analytics where you can exactly see how your profile is doing and which of your pins perform best on your profile. 

You get access to the number of impressions (=how many people saw a pin), how many people saved that pin and how many people actually clicked through that pin onto your blog.

This is gold for your business as you can see right away what your audience enjoys most.

The business account also allows you to create a branded cover and a featured board. 

And you can also link from your Pinterest profile to your website.

Taking into consideration all the features that a business account has it makes sense to create a business account on Pinterest when you:

  • are about to launch a blog that you’d like to monetize one day
  • have a blog that you’d like to monetize
  • have a business that you’d like to promote

In case you are a hobby blogger and don’t have the intention to make money with your blog. You don’t need a business account.

Now on to the questions whether you should use your personal account also for your business or not.

It depends on what your blog is about. 

If your blog is about the same topic as the pins you are pinning on your personal Pinterest account you can easily switch your personal account into a business account.

Let’s say you pinned a ton of vegan recipes to your personal Pinterest account in the past 2 years and gained already some followers there and now you’re blogging about vegan food. 

In this case, it would totally make sense to switch your personal account into your business account. 


Because this way you wouldn’t start at zero again and you’d already have some followers. 

Having already some followers on your account can be very helpful in the beginning especially when you want to grow your following and join group boards.

Pinning onto group boards helps your pin be seen by a larger audience and to get traffic to your blog faster. 

However, it’s not easy to get onto group boards with zero followers.

It’s much easier to be accepted to a group board with at least 100 or more followers.

BUT no worries: 

You can also get your pins seen by a larger audience when you start using tailwind tribes.

It’s super easy to get into tailwind tribes even with 0 Pinterest followers. 

In my opinion, it’s the best way to start even as a beginner blogger.

Anyways in case you are blogging about completely different things, it would make more sense to create a second account for your business.

That’s what I ended up doing when I started this blog in 2018.

You can have 2 accounts on Pinterest and pin your personal stuff to your personal account and all business-related things to the Pinterest business account.

I have a personal Pinterest account and decided to open a business account as I don’t blog about the things I used to pin onto my personal account. 

Keep in mind that while on your personal account you pin whatever you like, on your Pinterest Business account it’s important to be strategic about what you are pinning.

You wanna make sure that you only pin things about the topics you are blogging about =  that are relevant to your business and your audience would be interested in it.
